About Us

Fundación Tropicalia is a non-profit organization dedicated to the socioeconomic inclusion of Miches. We were born out of a long-term commitment to this land and its people, established in 2008 by Tropicalia, a sustainable tourism and real estate development by Cisneros Real Estate. We act as a strategic catalyst, bridging global resources, local wisdom, and multisector alliances to ensure every action creates regenerative impact. We work side-by-side with the community to build a future where tourism and Miches thrive in harmony. Grounded in reality, our approach starts with listening. For years, we've worked closely with the community to understand what they need, and built our programs around it. We are neighbors and fellow citizens, deeply rooted in this land, driven by a love for our heritage and a shared ambition to prosper responsibly. We work strategically with the community to promote access to opportunity within a complex environment, ensuring that economic growth from the tourism sector translates into authentic upward mobility for the local population.

Tropicalia

Tropicalia is a sustainable tourism destination developed by Cisneros Real Estate, located in Playa Esmeralda, in the municipality of Miches, on the northeastern coast of the Dominican Republic. This destination reflects a pioneering vision to redefine regenerative luxury in the Caribbean. In 2008, more than a decade before construction began, Cisneros and Tropicalia established Fundación Tropicalia as part of an integral sustainability strategy to lead the community development pillar and drive the socioeconomic and environmental wellbeing of Miches.

Miches

Nestled between the rolling peaks of the Cordillera Oriental and the shores of Samaná Bay, Miches is a rare coastal enclave in the northeastern Dominican Republic, located within the El Cedro Municipal District, in the Province of El Seibo. This rural landscape is where mountains and sea converge. Defined by its breathtaking geographic diversity of beaches, mountains, mangroves, forests, lagoons, and rivers. To the east, Miches is bordered by Laguna Redonda and Limón Wildlife Refuge, to the west Bahia la Gina and Los Haiteses National Park. Its northern and western shores meet the Marine Sanctuary Banco de la Plata and Navidad in the Atlantic Ocean.

Home to approximately 26,000 residents (Census 2022, ONE), the community’s social fabric is deeply rooted in the stewardship of the land and sea, through agriculture, cattle ranching, and artisanal fishing. While the region has rapidly become a global benchmark for luxury tourism, profound socioeconomic gaps remain: 67.22% of the population in the Yuma region navigates low socioeconomic realities (ENHOGAR 2024), and essential infrastructure, including public services, potable water, and waste collection, remains limited. As the destination emerges as a new tourist enclave, the local population faces the challenge of meeting new labor market demands, making the community especially vulnerable to economic exclusion.
