Social Sustainability: How Tropicalia Is Building Shared Prosperity in Miches
Every meaningful development story begins with people. Infrastructure and investment can reshape a region’s landscape, but lasting change depends on something deeper: a genuine belief in the people who call it home, in their ambitions, and in their ability to shape their own future. Investing in education, well-being and dignity is not a side note in the growth of a destination, it is the foundation on which everything else rests. When a community feels valued and empowered, the future becomes something its members build together.
That belief was on full display at a series of recent community gatherings in Miches, held ahead of the 2027 opening of Four Seasons Resort and Residences Dominican Republic at Tropicalia. General Manager Hervé Fucho was joined by Katherine Durán, Executive Director of Fundación Tropicalia; Daniela Martínez, Director of People & Culture at Four Seasons; Resort Manager José Arrue; and other team members who work closely with local communities. The sessions were designed to introduce the Four Seasons brand and approach to hospitality, opening conversations about future employment opportunities. More than 400 people attended from Miches, El Cedro and La Gina, along with professionals from the region who now live elsewhere in the country. This was far from a ceremonial formality. The turnout reflected an informed, engaged community that understands the role it plays in its own transformation.
That level of engagement did not happen by chance. It is the result of nearly two decades of work that began in 2008, when the Cisneros family started investing in the region through Fundación Tropicalia. Its programs in public education, gender equity, economic diversification and community building have never been a handout, but rather to provide local families the tools to make their own decisions and lead the way in shaping their community.
This commitment fits naturally with the Four Seasons philosophy, rooted in the Golden Rule: treat others as you would wish to be treated. As Hervé Fucho and his team noted, the real value of these conversations lay not in introducing a global brand, but in seeing how nearly twenty years of community work give hospitality in Miches a deeply human, regenerative purpose.
Tourism in the Caribbean has long struggled to create jobs of real, lasting value. In Miches, a well-organized and well-prepared community opens the door to a different model, one built on quality formal employment, strong local supplier networks and leadership from within.
That is precisely why Fundación Tropicalia began its work nearly two decades before Four Seasons welcomes its first guest. Conscious development is not something done to a place; it is something built alongside the people who live there.
As Tropicalia prepares to open its first phase in 2027, one lesson stands out - real estate and tourism development reach their full potential when they grow alongside a strong community. Miches shows that supporting people before, during and after a project is the only way to ensure that progress and prosperity stay where they belong, in the community.
